East Gippsland women build confidence at rifle skills day.

Eleven women from across East Gippsland came together on 28 October for a Rifle Skills Day, organised through the East Gippsland Women in Agriculture Network (EGWAN) in partnership with Buchan Precision Rifle Club. The partnership between Buchan Precision Rifle Club and Gunsport Trading has been instrumental in making these opportunities possible.

For women involved in farming, being confident and capable with a rifle can be an important practical skill, whether managing livestock, dealing with pest animals or undertaking general property management.

The day was a great success, providing participants with the opportunity to develop practical rifle-handling skills, improve their understanding of rifle operation and, most importantly, build confidence in handling firearms safely and responsibly. Participants enjoyed learning in a supportive, practical environment, asking questions and developing skills they can take back to their properties. One participant summed up the experience simply: "I had a blast!"

This November, a rifle cleaning and maintenance day is happening, and a further Rifle Skills Day is also scheduled for 24 February 2027, giving women an opportunity to develop their practical skills and confidence.

The East Gippsland Women in Agriculture Network (EGWAN) is a grassroots network established in 2016 to connect, support and build the skills of women involved in farming businesses across East Gippsland. The network covers a large geographical area, bringing together women from communities stretching from Omeo to Orbost and from Cann River to the High Country. A local steering committee guides the network's activities and identifies the skills and training opportunities women want and need.

EGWAN recognises that supporting women in agriculture goes beyond practical farm skills. Leadership, communication, negotiation, decision-making, business management and social connection are all important parts of building stronger farming businesses and communities.

The message is simple: when women have access to the right training, support and opportunities, they are better equipped to contribute to their farms, businesses and communities.

The success of the rifle skills day highlights the value of listening to what women want to learn and working with local organisations and businesses to make those opportunities happen.

EGWAN welcomes women involved in agriculture, whether they are full-time farmers, farm partners, new landholders or simply wanting to learn more. If you want to develop a skill, learn something new, or connect with other women in agriculture, get involved. The network is about learning together, sharing knowledge and supporting one another to build stronger, more confident farming women and communities.
