Pest plants and animals

About

Invasive weeds (pest plants) and invasive animals (pest animals) are some of the most severe threats to Australia's environment and primary production.

Invasive species displace native species, contribute significantly to environmental degradation, and reduce farm productivity. Pests do not respect boundary fences, so a lack of management can impact neighbours and beyond.

East Gippsland has many pest plants and animals. Although the SAF Project does not concentrate on weeds, this Project has contributed towards educating individuals on specific plants and animals that were/are of particular concern to farming communities of East Gippsland.

This includes:

African love grass

Four talks on African love grass (Eragrostis curvula) in 2020.

  1. Understanding the plant and learning from the Bega District with Neil Moss

  2. Herbicide control (Taskforce) with Bill Dobbie

  3. Soil health, carbon and nutrients with Greg Bender

  4. Farm hygiene and landscape weed management with Luke Pope
