With H5 bird flu now being detected in parts of Australia, many of us are wondering:
What does this actually mean for our birds, our properties and our local wildlife?
Whether you keep a few backyard chooks, run a small poultry operation, are concerned about zoonotic impacts, enjoy watching local wildlife, or are simply concerned about what might happen in our region — this session is designed to give you practical information without the panic.
Dr Sara Bailey is a local veterinarian who started her career in Orbost and has lived and worked across East Gippsland for many years. She's also a local landholder and, importantly, an enthusiastic participant in chook math — with her own quail and chickens at home!
Sara will cover the basics of bird flu and what we currently need to know, including:
🐔 Bird flu awareness — what it is and why H5 bird flu matters
🦆 How disease spreads — including the role of wild birds and how it can reach domestic poultry
🏡 Outdoor bird biosecurity — practical ways to reduce the risk around your birds and property
🧤 What you can do — including practical biosecurity measures and what to consider if you encounter sick or dead birds
📞 What happens if you're concerned — who to contact and what your local veterinary clinics need you to know
🌿 Protecting our wildlife — what to do if you find sick or dead wild birds
Then, make a plan for YOUR property
Following the webinar, we'll hold an in-person practical workshop where you can work through your own birds, property and potential risks.
Rather than simply giving you a list of things to worry about, we'll look at:
What are the risks on my property?
↓
What can I realistically change?
↓
What measures could reduce my risk?
↓
What will I do if the situation changes?
You'll have the opportunity to start developing your own practical bird biosecurity plan to take home.
